Bonjour à toutes et à tous,
Après une longue traversée du Pacifique et de l'Atlantique je m'arrête au port, enfin.
USS REPOSE AH 16 (1967):
Histoire du REPOSE:
Citation :
After ten and one-half years with the Reserve Fleet at Suisan Bay, California, USS REPOSE was once again called to active duty. She returned to commissioned service in the U. S. Navy at 1400 on October 16, 1965 ands within 151 days after call-up the USS REPOSE departed San Francisco on January 3, 1966. After refresher training and upkeep in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and Subic Bay, Philippines, she arrived in Chu Lai, Republic of Vietnam on February 14, 1966.
Vietnam marked the innovation of the concept of mobile hospital support. In this war, USS REPOSE was stationed offshore near the sites of the heaviest battles and took virtually all casualties aboard by helo. She was usually underway and seldom departed the combat zone. Her mission was her area of responsibility in I Corps Tactical Zone from DaNang north to the DMZ (17th parallel). On January 30, 1967, she performed the 3000 consecutive successful helicopter landing. On March 29, 1967, she marked the 2000th surgical operation in Vietnam.
USS YORKTOWN CVS 10 (1966):
Histoire du USS YORKTOWN CVS 10:
Citation :
On 24 February 1967, Yorktown entered the Long Beach Naval Shipyard for a seven-month overhaul. She completed repairs early in October and, after refresher training, resumed normal west coast operations for most of what remained of 1967. On 28 December, she stood out of Long Beach, bound for her last tour of duty in the western Pacific. After a stop at Pearl Harbor, she arrived in the Far East late in January 1968. Instead of putting in at a Japanese port for turnover Yorktown headed directly to the Sea of Japan to provide ASW and search and rescue (SAR) support for the contingency force assembled in the wake of the North Korean capture of Pueblo. She remained on that assignment for 30 days. On 1 March, she was released from that duty, and the warship headed for Subic Bay in the Philippines. During the remainder of the deployment, the aircraft carrier did another three tours of duty with TF 77 on Yankee Station. In each instance, she provided ASW and SAR support for the fast carriers launching air strikes on targets in Vietnam. She concluded her last tour of duty in Vietnamese waters on 16 June and set a course for Sasebo Japan where she stopped from 19-21 June before heading back to the United States.

USS ROCKWALL APA 230 (boîtier: 1952, insert: 48/51):
Histoire du USS ROCKWALL APA 230:
Citation :
USS Rockwall (APA-230) was a Haskell-class attack transport that saw service with the US Navy in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
USS RANDALL APA 234 (boîtier: 1952/1953, insert: 1952/1953):
Histoire du USS RANDALL APA 234:
Citation :
When World War II ended, she transported Army and Marine personnel from various points in the Pacific to the US mainland. From 1952 until her decommissioning, the ship sailed from Hampton Roads and Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek often berthing at NOB Pier 2. Between 1952 and 1955, she made numerous trips to the Caribbean for training purposes and a six month training cruise to the Mediterranean. She had a total of three Captains - Nicholas Frank, Henry Sturr and Christopher Brackstone, all Naval Academy graduates. In 1954 she received the "E" award for her class.
In 1956 USS Randall was used in the filming of Away All Boats, mainly around St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and Vieques Island, Puerto Rico.
USS TORTUGA LSD 26 (1966):
Histoire du USS TORTUGA LSD 26:
Citation :
Tortuga sailed for Vietnamese waters on 1 March 1966, arrived at Vung Tau on 18 April, and relieved Belle Grove (LSD-2) as support ship for "Game Warden" — the Navy's operation designed to interdict the flow of Communist supplies along the coastlines of South Vietnam. Initially, Tortuga operated in the Rung Sat special zone between Saigon and Vung Tau, helping to guard the entrance to the shipping channels snaking through Viet Cong territory to the capital city.
Tortuga shifted to the Mekong Delta region on 12 June to serve as a floating base for the Navy's fast PBR's of TF 116 and for a detachment of Army Bell UH-1B Huey helicopter gunships. The PBR's, attached to River Patrol Squadron 512, were small yet relatively heavily armed craft. Each mounted a .50-caliber machine gun forward and an "over-and-under" combination mount of one .50-caliber machine gun mounted over an 81 millimeter mortar aft. The helicopters, too, were relatively heavily armed, packing a "punch" of rockets of varying sizes and up to six machine guns. Initially, the helicopters were Army "choppers" from the 145th Aviation Detachment. However, by the end of Tortuga's tour, they were Navy aircraft from Task Force "Sea Wolf." Together, the PBR's and Hueys conducted their patrols and forays into the jungle; the PBR's through the muddy waterways while the helicopters flew close cover above.
Occasionally, the teams would capture enemy munitions. On one occasion, on 12 June at the mouth of the Co Chien River, Tortuga's PBR's participated in the capture of a large stock of guns and munitions captured from a damaged trawler which had been forced aground and set afire.
During her support operations with the riverine assault groups, Tortuga received a number of distinguished visitors ranging from General William C. Westmoreland, Commander, Military Assistance Group; Rear Admiral Norvell G. Ward, Commanding Naval Forces, Vietnam; as well as United States Ambassador to South Vietnam Henry Cabot Lodge; and news commentator Chet Huntley, who brought with him an NBC camera team to record a news story on Tortuga's river-patrol base activities.
Her deployment completed in the summer of 1966, Tortuga got underway on 30 August and steamed via Japan to the west coast. She arrived at San Diego on 7 November for leave, upkeep, and overhaul. The refit lasted through April 1967, modernizing the ship and preparing her for another WestPac deployment. Following a period of refresher training and amphibious exercises, Tortuga sailed on 21 July 1967 from San Diego and arrived, via Hawaii, Guam, and the Philippines, at Da Nang on 5 September.
Upon arrival, Tortuga relieved Monticello (LSD-35) with Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) "Bravo" and operated with that unit into the fall of 1967. She took part in Operations "Fortress Sentry" and "Formation Leader", before her detachment from ARG "B" on 9 November. Subsequently, Tortuga loaded a cargo of disabled or damaged CH-46 helicopters for transport from Da Nang to Okinawa, where they were repaired for further service. For the remainder of the year, from 3 to 31 December, Tortuga conducted cargo lifts from Japanese ports to Vietnam and vice-versa.

Bonjour à toutes et à tous,
Un petit détour par le Viêt Nam...
USS VEGA AF-59 (1970):
Histoire du navire en 1970:
Citation :
1970 Stateside overhaul After entering the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard on 2 January 1970 for her regular overhaul, Vega spent three months in dockyard hands before she emerged on 2 April to commence refresher training out of San Diego, California. She trained in the southern California operating area into the summer, before shifting on 21 August to the Army Refrigerator (Reefer) Piers at Oakland, California. There, she conducted a pre-deployment loadout of goods for shipment to the western Pacific.
[edit] Return to WestPac Vega again got underway on 11 September, bound for Subic Bay, and crossed the 160th meridian east on 26 September to commence officially her WestPac tour. After evading typhoon "Hope" en route, Vega stopped briefly at Subic Bay before she pressed on, on 8 October for her first line tour of the deployment on Yankee Station off the coast of Vietnam. She returned to Subic on 22 October. During this tour, she transferred over 226 tons of foodstuffs during underway replenishments.
Her second line period saw the ship transfer 290 tons of provisions to ships with task force TF 77 on Yankee Station. Bangkok, Thailand, provided welcome relief for liberty parties before the ship returned to the line a third time on 29 November. Operating in support of "Market Time," Vega transferred some 392 tons of food -- Christmas supplies -- to ships engaged in the daily interdiction patrols of the sea lanes. Further, the ship delivered some 67 tons of supplies to Danang, Camranh Bay, Con Son, An Thoi, and Hon Choi -- all in South Vietnam.
After visiting Hong Kong from 13 to 21 December, Vega spent Christmas at Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and then returned to Subic Bay to load supplies. Before the year was out, the supply ship was underway again—for her fourth line period off Vietnam. During this swing, the ship transferred 300 tons of food to ships on "Yankee Station" and "Market Time" patrols. Many sailors on the ships she supplied probably enjoyed the fresh fruit acquired on Taiwan during the ship's visit there prior to deploying off the Vietnam coastline.
USS LYNDE McCORMICK DDG8 (1962):
Histoire du navire dans les années 60:
Citation :
1960s Lynde McCormick departed Boston 23 August 1961 for her home port, San Diego, arriving 16 September. Early in 1962, she tested her missiles and antisubmarine weaponry in the Pacific missile range. Exercises and experiments continued in preparation for deployment to the western Pacific, for which she sailed 19 November 1962.
She arrived at Yokosuka on 6 December and within a week was on station with a 7th Fleet task group, taking up her part in the schedule of readiness training and exercises. Returning to San Diego 15 June 1963, she proceeded to Sacramento to help initiate its new deepwater port. All‑encompassing refresher training followed overhaul and modification at Hunter's Point early in 1964, increasing her antiair warfare capabilities. A high state of readiness had been achieved when the Gulf of Tonkin incidents of 2 August and 4 August escalated the conflict in Vietnam.
In company with CruDesFlot 11, Lynde McCormick departed 5 August for a 6 month deployment along the Vietnamese coast, primarily in the screen for Bon Homme Richard and other aircraft carriers. She returned to San Diego 6 February 1965. Lynde McCormick spent the remainder of the year conducting coastal exercises, a successful competitive firing of her, missiles, and a summer cruise to Hawaii training midshipmen.
After anti-submarine exercises with the Canadian Navy in January 1966, Lynde McCormick prepared for a third tour of duty in WestPac. She left San Diego on 1 March and 1 month later was shelling Vietcong bunkers and gun emplacements in the Mekong Delta. In May, she sailed up the eastern coast to support Yankee Station carrier operations against North Vietnam until August, when she sailed for her home port, arriving at San Diego the 26 October. On 27 October, she entered drydock at Long Beach for a thorough overhaul. This was completed 23 March 1967.
A bientôt si vous le voulez bien.
